When the Office of the Commissioner Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (OCMOKK) began work on a refreshed brand identity in late 2024, they turned to a Torres Strait business that understands community, culture and communication from the inside out.
Based on Waiben (Thursday Island), Lola Digital has quickly become a trusted communications partner in Zenadth Kes, delivering creative, culturally informed marketing and content that speaks directly to local audiences.
When OCMOKK began working with Lola Digital in 2024, it was a one-woman operation. It has since grown into a thriving agency, supporting clients across the region and abroad, while also creating employment and training pathways for Torres Strait Islander women.
Today, Lola Digital is building a new generation of creatives in the region.
Through its work, the agency supports young women and young mothers from the Torres Strait to develop practical skills in graphic design, marketing and social media management. Through their employment, these women gain real-world experience inside a fast-growing and multi-award-winning creative agency.
For Queensland Women’s Week, the Office of the Commissioner (OCMOKK) recognises the leadership of Kantesha Ward and the Lola Digital team as an example of the powerful impact women-led businesses can have in regional communities.
OCMOKK Commissioner C’Zarke Maza said working with a local agency brings clear benefits.
“Having on-the-ground services in the region is important to reaching the audiences we engage with and support,” Mr Maza said.
“Local knowledge of trends, communication channels, events and community dynamics makes a significant difference in how messages are delivered and received.”
But the partnership represents more than just effective communications.
“Not only is it advantageous to have a marketing team based on Waiben, it’s also powerful to work with a First Nations, women-led agency,” Mr Maza said.
“The natural care and commitment to community shines through in the work they produce and in their dedication to making positive change for the region and our children’s future.”
Since partnering with OCMOKK, Lola Digital has delivered a range of creative and marketing services designed to strengthen the organisation’s brand and community engagement.
Lola Digital’s founder and Chief Executive Officer Kantesha Ward said the agency’s approach combines cultural understanding, strategic communication and professional delivery to ensure communications are locally relevant and effective.
“We are the first business of its kind, operating on country in the Torres Strait region,” said Mrs Ward.
“We are passionate about empowering our people and passing on knowledge and skills that are not only transferrable, but highly sought after,” she said.
Through entrepreneurship, mentorship and creative leadership, Lola Digital is demonstrating what is possible when women lead from community, culture and purpose.
As Commissioner Maza noted, the agency’s work continues to strengthen both organisations and the communities they serve.
“Congratulations to Lola Digital for the excellent services they provide and for their ongoing commitment to delivering content and marketing that creates real impact in our communities.”
